The Institute for Studies and Economic Analyses (Istituto di Studi e Analisi Economica - ISAE) was set up in 1999 with Decree n. 374/98, within the reform of the Ministry of Treasury and of the Ministry of Budget and Economic Planning, following upon Law no. 94/1997.

ISAE carries out analyses and research projects "with the specific target of making useful analyses for the economic and social policy decisions of the Government, of Parliament and of the General Government ".

ISAE carries out business and consumer surveys; provides quarterly and annual macroeconomic forecasts; supplies both national and international short-, medium- and long-term economic analyses as well as macro- and microeconomic studies on public finance and on measures to prompt social and territorial cohesion; examines the economic policies attained through regulation rather than through the public budget, analyses the complex dynamics of sustainable development in its environmental, economic and social aspects.

Since March 28, 2003 the President of ISAE is Alberto Majocchi.

The Reports are the synthesis and the final goal of the research projects carried out by ISAE.

The ISAE Reports devoted to forecasts are issued twice a year and provide forecasts and macroeconomic analyses on Italy, Europe and the rest of the world. The forecasts for Italy are also broken down by geographical partitions and with reference to the Italian Administrative Regions. The ISAE macroeconomic forecasts are updated four times a year: twice when drafting the Reports and twice in a Monthly Note.

ISAE Consumer and Business Surveys are carried out in the framework of the EU harmonised scheme. As a consequence, the data resulting from these surveys are fully comparable with those from similar institutes in the European Union (such as the French INSEE and the German IFO).

The Report on "Monitoring Italy" was published for the first time in January 2002. It describes the Italian economy and economic policy to a public of non-resident experts and of non-expert residents. The Report presentations were preceded by a Conference on the single Report Chapters which were presented and debated by national and international experts.

Euro-Zone Economic Outlook

The Working Paper series Documenti di Lavoro hosts the preliminary results of research projects carried out within the ISAE. Their quality and diffusion are subject to the favourable opinion of an anonymous referee. The series is meant for experts and policy-makers with the aim of submitting proposals and raising suggestions and criticism.

Given the interest shown for particular topics dealt with in the Reports, in October 2001 ISAE inaugurated this series of little monotematic volumes gathering some of the most interesting ISAE Report Chapters.

The ISAE Discussion Paper Series gathers surveys on specific problems of the Italian and international economy. The papers stem from surveys made by researchers working within or outside ISAE prepared for Conferences or Workshops held at ISAE, or from the deepening or rielaboration of single Report sections or from the selection of experiences and scientific material prepared for events in which ISAE had a leading role.

Reports on Sustainable Development - The objective of a sustainable development, which is a stable target within the European Union strategies, implies a substantial rethinking of the relationships between economic growth, environmental protection and social equity.

In consideration of the ongoing economic and political debate on topics connected with local government finance, ISAE, SRM Association of Naples (Study and Research Association for the Mezzogiorno of Italy), IRES Piemonte (Institute for Economic and Social Research in Piedmont), IRPET (Regional Institute for the Economic Programming of Tuscany) and - since 2007 - IReR of Milan (Regional Institute for the Research of Lombardy) decided to devote a Report to the financial problems of the Italian provinces and municipalities, in order to describe the financial status of local governments and analyse the structural reasons for their behaviours from an economic viewpoint.
